What we do

The Hummingbird Leadership Project (HBLP): The goal of HBLP is to build the character and personal leadership capacity of children through schools using the lessons of the life and work of Professor Wangari Maathai. This school-based project is developing a curriculum that educates, empowers, and engages children to grow into actively responsible citizens. The HBLP uses a blended approach anchored around five core character traits (values) that exemplify the life and work of Prof Wangari Maathai: Courage, Resilience, Integrity, Service to others and Compassion and backed by social emotional learning theory and practice. The Foundation in partnership with other organisations is piloting a curriculum across Kenya.

Our Impact

Foundation engaged 448 students, 51 teachers in the pilot phase of the HBLP.

The pilot has had a broad regional approach and gathered insights from urban and rural schools. WMF recognizes that teachers have a significant influence on the learning experience of their students. As such, the HBLP also has a teaching coaching & mentoring component. To this end, WMF has partnered with an emotional intelligence network, Six Seconds, to leverage EQ tools as we mentor and coach teachers as part of a holistic approach.

The Green Jeneration (J is for Junior)

This is a new movement that the WMF is supporting to help children in schools create beautiful learning environments by greening their schools and developing the value of responsible stewardship. The project also creates opportunities for children of all walks of life to spend time in nature at the Karura Forest under the leadership of the Karura Forest Environmental Education Trust. This project is currently active in 2 schools in Kibera.
