Wangari Maathai Marathon

We organized the first-ever Wangari Maathai Marathon this year on the 3rd of March, which took place at Karura Forest to mark Wangari Maathai Day. The marathon’s main objective was to promote the idea that every individual has the power to make a difference. Additionally, the event was a tribute to the late Professor Wangari Maathai’s legacy, promoting her values of environmental sustainability, human rights, peace, and women empowerment.

Individuals from around the globe came together to commemorate the extraordinary accomplishment of the late Prof. Wangari Maathai. Over 2,000 participants from 39 regions gathered at Karura Forest, energized and prepared to compete in the various race categories for the half marathon. Each race category awarded the first three winners. Franklin Ngelel and Lydia Nyasikera each won Sh100,000 for winning the 21km Men’s and Women’s categories, respectively. Nehemiah Kipruto and Fridah Ndinda were awarded Sh75,000 each for winning the male and female categories of the 10km race. Read more about the race results here

The Wangari Maathai Marathon was a great success, and we would like to express our gratitude to our sponsors, who provided their support both in cash and in kind, and to our partner, Team Jasho, who helped us coordinate the marathon. We intend to make the Wangari Maathai Marathon an annual event, and we plan to hold it in different forests to continue honouring the legacy of the late Wangari Maathai.
